The 2009 Buccaneers will have a lot of new things in place when the season begins. First and foremost is new Head Coach Raheem Morris, the former Defensive Backs Coach for the Bucs. His defense has produced 36 pro-bowlers since 1996 and in the past thirteen seasons has had his defense ranked in the top 10 eleven times and into the top 5 eight times.
The Bucs also officially released former jailed QB Michael Vick even as his federal time comes to an end and he is officially released from federal supervision. As of this writing, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was to meet with the QB but indications are that this, the 90th NFL season will not include Vick.
The franchise made some additional moves; firing Head Coach Jon Gruden and defensive coordinator Bruce Allen was released as GM and replaced with Mark Dorminik. The franchise also quietly cut veteran QB Brian Griese, ever more confident in their first round draft pick (17th overall pick) Kansas State QB Josh Freeman and the acquisition of Byron Leftwich as well as signing away RB Derrick Ward away from the Giants. The franchise also traded for TE Kellen Winslow Jr. for 2 draft picks. The team also released veterans Derrick Brooks, Joey Galloway, Jeff Garcia, Cato June, Warrick Dunn and Ike Hilliard.
The outlook for the 2009 season looks better than the past two 9-7 seasons. The end of season collapse (lost the final four games) caused them to miss the playoffs just one year removed from their NFC South Division Championship. The team defense is solid and the secondary one of the best in the league. The offensive will be run by former Boston College Head Coach Jeff Jagodinski who should put in place a power running offense built around RB Derrick Ward.
Look for the Bucs to compete for the NFC South title and be sure to get your tickets and cheer on your Bucs to the Super Bowl. |
